Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra: The black “moles” on your face, that are not really moles!

22 May Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra: The black “moles” on your face, that are not really moles!

Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra (also known as DPN) is characterized by small brown or black spots that are on the skin around the cheekbones and eyes and sometimes other areas of the face, neck, chest, back

The spots are not medically concerning, but may be cosmetically undesirable. They also tend to grow and increase with age.

The major cause of DPN is unknown though it has been found to run in families.

How is DPN treated?
Treatment options for DPN include scissor excision, shave excision, cryosurgery, electrocauterization, curettage, dermabrasion, and laser removal.

Electrocauterization involves using an electric current through a small probe to burn skin tissue. A topical numbing cream is used to ensure procedure is comfortable.
